For centuries, dentures have been the proper treatment to replace multiple missing teeth, and modern dentures are extremely realistic in appearance. Today, denture wearers have more options than ever before. Today’s dentures may be partial or full, removable or fixed, and implant supported or not. Fixed dentures are anchored to dental implants, while removable dentures may or may not use implants for extra support. At Aurora Dental, we work hard to create a customized denture option for each patient that truly fits that patient’s needs and desires.

Traditional Dentures

Traditional dentures are removable, and they do not attach to dental implants. Full dentures replace all the teeth on the upper or lower arch, while partial dentures replace some of the teeth on one arch.

Full Dentures: A full denture features a customized acrylic base that resembles gum tissue, with high quality replacement teeth attached. A lower denture rests on the bottom gums, while an upper denture has an acrylic palate that adheres to the roof of the mouth with suction.

An immediate denture may be placed when the teeth are extracted and worn for several months during healing. Some dentists then replace the immediate denture with a custom denture, while others create the custom denture right away and then reline it after healing. Full denture wearers may need dental adhesives to help hold their dentures in place.

Partial Dentures: A partial denture also consists of replacement teeth on a customized acrylic base. However, since some natural teeth remain, the partial denture also features metal clasps or precision attachments that anchor it to the neighboring teeth for support. If the adjacent teeth are crowned, a partial denture can often be anchored to the crowns.

Implant Supported Dentures

We highly recommend securing dentures with dental implants. They allow us to remove all or some of the acrylic palate from an upper denture, and they help to secure dentures against slipping or pinching. They also restore greater than 90% of original bite strength, allowing you to chew tough steak, corn on the cob, and other challenging foods with ease. We can stabilize a removable denture with just two implants, while a handful of implants can support a full, fixed arch of replacement teeth that never leave your mouth.

While most dental implant solutions require a multi-stage process, leaving you to wear a removable denture for a period of time, the All-on-Four is a unique option that allows us to place a fixed arch of replacement teeth on the same day as your extractions. This immediate-load solution is an excellent choice for those who want to bypass removable dentures altogether.
